We do a lot of server builds each day (we average around 10 systems per day) at our purpose built build facility on-site (fully air-conditioned, with full ESD static prevention on all workstations). Our current capacity allows 5 systems to be on build at once, and allows up to 40x systems to be on test (as we now have multiple test racks with KVM’s for multiple test systems).

Many of the systems we’re now building are for various customers involved in video production, video walls and large format displays. We also produce a lot of digital signage systems too.

The chosen card for many customers is the AMD FirePro, due to the native workstation grade performance as well as high number of video display support.

I thought I would put together a list of the most popular FirePro cards that our customers use for multi-monitor setups.

AMD FirePro W600



This card is superb for simply driving up to 4 high resolution monitors (DisplayPort). It has a 750MHz core, 2GB of GDDR5 SDRAM and uses the latest PCIe 3.0 technology.

This is also an excellent compact card, so while it is still full height, it is very short depth, so can be installed in many smaller installs where a longer card will not fit. We install this card in both full size systems, but also in 1U and 2U rackmount chassis using a riser-card. We frequently assemble a 1U Supermicro based system for a customer that has a single E3-Xeon CPU, usually 32GB RAM and this model of W600 graphics card.


AMD FirePro W7000



This is the next step up to the W600. It is a larger card, almost full length, and supports the same number of screens – a total of 4 high resolution monitors (DisplayPort) but has a faster 950MHz core clock speed and an increased 4GB GDDR5 SDRAM.



AMD FirePro W9000



This is the big daddy of multi display graphics card. It supports 6x simultaneous high resolution DisplayPort monitors (connction is made using Mini DisplayPort), 975MHz core clock speed and a massive 6GB of GDDR5 SDRAM. It is also a full length, and full height card, so needs plenty of internal cooling and space.
